So far my experience with the Nokia E65 has been largely positive with a few minor issues taking away some of the shine. I must admit to being a fan of the Symbian OS- it is designed for voice usage above all and is an impressive system for any smartphone to have onboard. The real beauty comes when it is implemented in a small device like the Nokia E65. It feels like a phone, it looks like a phone yet it contains many smartphone features that I suspect many people will never use. It is aimed at the business market though and I feel sure that many people will love what it can do and start to really appreciate it.
In the case of the E65 it almost feels as if the OS is too big for the phone. That may sound silly and no doubt some people like devices that allow them to view emails and not necessarily reply to them on the go but, and this is a personal view, it can seem like a marriage that is too one sided with the hardware holding back the included software. Having push email and exchange sync is great and the contacts and calendar functions work perfectly but the whole experience is let down by using a standard number pad. I feel sure that the majority of people will prefer this and a couple of people I have spoken to absolutely adore predictive text. My response of “it’s because you know no better” went down well I can tell you.
I have to ignore the data input side of things for these articles though because it wasn’t a surprise to find only a number pad included on the device and it is built for a specific purpose which is to bring business type functionality to a smart looking small device.
On the whole I found the performance to be very speedy but as the available memory drops a little the occasional stall occurred and I would find myself waiting for a few seconds before it started to move again. I am not convinced that there is enough available memory for continued stable use and have to conclude that Windows Mobile 5.0 handles available memory better than Symbian when things are getting busy.
Nokia have made efforts to include some original features which will be of benefit to many people if they take the time to understand how to use them. The conference facility is brilliant as is the VOIP feature, WiFi connections were pretty impressive for such a small device and I had no issues with the Bluetooth set up. Unfortunately all of these facilities do have an impact on battery life and using some for extended periods of time may mean needing a charger handy. Maybe the battery life will improve as it is conditioned but bear in mind that there are a lot of power hungry features powered by a small battery in this unit. That is by no means a bad thing because I would rather they were there than not.
This phone can also be a potential cost saver when you consider VOIP and the conference facility so it genuinely is a device that could pay for itself quite quickly if your usage (and general location) fits the right pattern to benefit from this.
The big surprise for me has been the ability to enjoy many entertainment functions in such a small device- videos are perfectly viewable, eBooks (using MobiPocket on full screen) are readable and the music side is excellent- with a decent set of headphones we are approaching iPod quality and this was a real surprise.
The included calendar is very poor and so far little effort has been made to improve this- the ability to be able to set alarms by default is surely a needed option? Most other aspects of the software are top class apart from the web browser which in no way worked as well as on the Nokia E61 but Opera’s worked well for me anyway.
All in all this is a superb device that works as it states on the tin and you are unlikely to be disappointed if you buy one. Remember though that the data input side falls well short of the potential held within and for a hardened PDA or smartphone user this may well be reason enough to avoid.
>the data input side falls well short of the potential held within
I agree that the data entry side is limited because of the phone keypad. But I think that if data entry is your key concern you should go for a different type of phone (such as E61).
The combination of the small size with the device capabilities make this phone the best one I have ever had (and I think phone choices are a very personal thing as it depends on a persons needs and usage patterns). It has all the capabilities I require in a format I can carry everywhere. The keypad is OK for emergency use. If I away for extended periods and I need the phone for e-mail I also carry a bluetooth keyboard – which is a very powerful combination. I found that most of the time I can safely leave the notebook as I can do all the things I need with the one phone (+ keyboard if required).

i agree wholeheartedly with everything positive said about the e65. i’ve used endless nokia phones in the past, palm devices, pocket pcs and nokia communicators 9210i and 9300, and until recently the e61 – the e65 beats them all.
in designing any device there are always compromises to be made. i commend nokia for the balance achieved in the e65.
can’t dream of ever wanting to replace it … well, hsdpa…

A good, balanced review! The E65 is by far the best cellular phone I’ve ever owned, and it’s the first to convince me to fully convert from Series 40 to Series 60. My only regrets are that two features available on Series 40 handsets were not included on th E65, namely scalable fonts and the ability for the camera to take shots in landscape mode.
Then again, the Internal Search feature is so incredibly useful to me, I forgive you and still love you, Nokia!

I love my E65. Had it for a month now and so far no major problems. If you install rotateme you can even use it in landscape view. Very useful for browsing.

Hi,
I need some information about the e65 before buying it. I’ve read all over that one cannot change the system font size in this phone, but does that hold true for applications like QuickOffice or PDF viewers or Mobipocket, etc? I need a phone that I can read books on in a moving vehicle and the default font size I’ve seen on the e65 so far is just too small for prolonged use.
Thanks.

Hi! The first time I bought my E65 I was so excited. All the features are good, except the speaker. The speaker is located only 1 at the side and I can’t hear a thing if i’m in a busy place or in traffic. Even if I put it in maximum volume, i still can’t hear the alarm ring. Help!

There is a very annoying problem withe the passphrase lenght on a Nokia E65 WLAN settings when using WPA-PSK (pre shared key).
i just got a Nokia E65 yesterday, from a local Nokia Store. The firmware version is:
1.0633.18.01
11-01-07
RM-208
Nokie E65
While configuring the device to use our network which users a 26 characters passphrase, the E65 refused to connect, always giving the error message.
If the passphrase is (temporarily) changed on the Access point to an 8 character setting, then the E65 connects with no problem whatsoever.
It also works perfectly when used with an open network (i.e. no passphrase protection).
Nokia must address this issue as many corporate wireless LANs do use long passphrases for security reasons, thus it is required for the E65 to work within that environment if its going to be considered a real serious “business category” device.
For the record, an N800 Internet table is also used in this same network with no problem using the 26 characters passphrase.

I bought a Nokia E65 like a month ago and i use a gmail remote mailbox but recently it start sending an error message.. it says “General: System Erro (-7510)” and then the application stops. How can I fix this?
Comment by Abel Bedoya — July 18, 2007 @ 2:43 pm |
Abel.
You may have already tried this but try clearing away any cache that may be on the phone and reset it. A friend of mine got that error and we didn’t know if it just cleared itself in time or if that did it for him.

I had a bad surprise with my E65 “peeling” after a few months of use : http://www.casualtek.com/2007/08/22/peeling-phones-nokia-tries-to-ignore-the-issue/
It seems to me that I’m not the only one.

Great review.
Unfortunately, The lack of quality software is very disturbing.
For example – unlike Palm or WindowsCE, there is no infrared-based remote control software for S60

I’m a Bostonian just starting work in Dubai, where my locked American phone is useless. I am drawn to the Nokia E70 with its full qwerty kbd and butterfly hinge. BUT it appears to be discontinued. Stores here have no stock and offer the to sell the floor demo unit, which is kinda beat up.
Anybody know anything about a follow on product or re-release of the E70? It’s too good to believe that Nokia will simply retire it.

Now that I have buyed Psiloc Font Magnifier I start to like the E65. Good solid design for everyday use. Have this phone obtained as a back up for my N95 8G. It’s a shame Nokia didn’t include the font enlargement menu on the E65, Had hoped to find this on the latest sofware update, not so, they include this item on the 6120 classic and N95 8G so why not on the E65 ?
