I don’t like using gmail from the web interface or from the gmail java client. I wanted to use POP/SMTP to get my gmail. Here is how I got POP3 gmail to work with the E61’s Email Client.

1. Log into your gmail account and change your settings to allow POP3.
2. On your phone, set up a new email account as normal.
3. Set up the incoming/outgoing settings as follows:

Incomming:

User name: The email address you typicall use to log into gmail. I.E. “your username”@gmail.com
Password: The password you typically use to log into gmail
Incoming mail serv.: pop.gmail.com
Access point to use: Your choice
Mailbox name: Your choice, I choose “Gmail”
Mailbox Type: POP3
Security (ports): SSL/TLS
Port: User Defined / 995
APOP secure login: Off

Outgoing:
My email Address: Your gmail email address
Username: Your gmail email address you typically use to login
Password: Your gmail passwork you typicall use to login
Outgoing Mail serv: smtp.gmail.com
Access Point in use: Your choice
Security (ports): SSL/TLS
Port: User Defined / 465

That should get it going. You can customize how mail is stored on gmail from the gmail settings page. You can also set up auto retrieval from the settings on you phone. Just poke around the connection settings on your phone to see all the options. They are pretty self explainitory.

You might like to try it again now and see if it works- there have been a couple of problems with Vodafone Mail over the last week, as far as I know, and this could well have affected SMTP / POP3 access.

The other usual problem is the failure to authenticate account settings against the SMTP address, which will result in an error on a good mailserver, as it stops the server being used as a open relay; if it’s been working fine before, though, there’s no reason why this should suddenly cause a problem.

Thanks for all of the help. In the end I tried mail.btinternet.com and that worked. Strange how mail servers just seem to stop? Happened with my Treo a lot as well…

Hi Steve,
Maybe you can try a different smtp server? It always does the trick for me. I have 3 different emailaccounts on my e61 and I use different smtp server addresses for all of them but not nessisarily the ones from the account.
Maybe it helps..

Are you still using the same accesspoint for the e-mail accounts? The outgoing SMTP server you are using, is it your mobile operators SMTP server, or is it the one for the e-mail accounts? Have you tried backup the phone and restore factory settings with *#7370#?
