What do you want from your blog?

Filed under: Articles — stmcgill @ 9:14 pm

I read this comment posted in response to a couple of articles pointing to reviews on All About Symbian-

“Why are you qouting AAS content ? Supply a link if you feel a need, but I think it looks better when you supply your own, original content..”

When I started this blog it was done on a whim and I expected it to be read by only a handful of people- over the past few weeks it has mostly been in the top 20 of blogs on WordPress with a high point of number 5 (sadly when I took the screenshot today it dropped a little to number 26:))

My history with the web is mostly with www.palm247.com and www.windowsmobile247.com which are obviously sites dedicated to rival mobile platforms. They have been much more successful than I ever expected and with a small amount of work I can trawl up countless bits of interesting news for owners of these devices.

With a blog dedicated to one single device on a brand new operating system that developers seem less than willing to support at this time finding interesting news and writing original content can be either too time consuming or more likely impossible to find. I also write for PDA Essentials and Palmtop User and thus time is precious, especially with a young family and a full time job.

I will continue to point this blog to articles that are E61 related on other sites as I feel that certain people like Steve and Ewan deserve as many hits as they can get. If you take a moment to think about the Symbian web presence these two guys are right at the top of the tree and do an awful lot to help out thousands of users.

The other reason is because there is not much software being released currently and sites like e61life, E-Series and Techmundo are doing a superb job of finding original content for E61 owners and useful tips that I simply don’t have the time to root out.

If there is something specific you would like to see on this blog please post a ‘constructive’ comment and I will do my best to include it or if you have some original content or reviews you would like to submit just drop me a line at .

Finally and nothing to do with all of the above- my E61 battery is now draining after only one day- no Bluetooth on, no constant GPRS connection and brightness at three quarters. Any ideas?:)

  1. My E61 battery also drains quickly. I don’t know whether a firmware update will fix it or is it a hardware problem?

My device is not even two months old yet. It disapointing taking into consideration the size of the battery.

  2. I quote other blogs all the time, especially when their content is good. No harm sharing what’s good, right? I mean, I do give credit to the original authors, by pointing back to their site.

Regarding your battery issue, have your got any 3G or EDGE service running all the time? That’s been known to drain battery as well (in addition to WiFi and/or BT).

  4. Yes. Checklist:
    - GSM, not 3G
    - Wi-Fi not in use
    - No rogue apps running in RAM (have you installed anything recently?)
    - Bluetooth not always on and connected to a PC at limit of range
    - Tried a restart?

  5. I have to say that i agree with Michael here. Pointing to other articles is good but always quoting part of it without stating it clearly and having a special formatting that allows the reader to see that it’s a quote can be confusing and not do justice to the original article since you’re extracting a small part of the article and exposing it out of context.

In fact, at the begining of your blog, i found myself very confused as i never knew whether what was in your blog posts was your views on a particular product, a copy/past of a press release or a copy/paste of an article from another web site. And things sometimes get even more confusing when you mix you point of view and a press release in the same post. This is a constructive criticism, i actually like this blog but I think that pointing to an article without quoting it would be better.

  7. I have been reading four E61 blogs for the past two months. Mainly because I want to find out how to use it - more about that later - and what is available for it - both software and hardware. Not having a Nokia or Symbian OS previously there is a learning curve which I am slowly climbing.

Please keep on refering to other links - it’s all information.

Please, when you refer to software, say what it does. Referring to a program called, for example, ZBling (not that you did) means nothing to me and I have to go chasing a link, maybe download a program just to find out it whether it’s relevant to me.

As regards using the phone, the Nokia manual is of limited use. It says it has a wireless connection - so why can’t I access my wireless network to access my files? (I know I can using Bluetooth, IR or the link cable). It appears that I can only use the wireless connection to access the Web. Is that right.

Don’t get me wrong, I am delighted with my phone, it’s a computer in my pocket and it’s great for taking notes at a meeting, referring to a spreadsheet, (I say referring because making significant changes to sheets is just about impossible). Great for viewing videos, listening to MP3s both music and spoken.

The calculator is crap, not intuative at all but surfing the net is great.

Of course as a phone it is great but why, when I want to dial a number from the contacts, does it give me the option of making a video call when the phone does not have a video itself?

I think I should stop there - Constuctive comments appreciated

  8. Ive noticed battery issues too, and Im pretty sure on my phone it has to do with installing the free tetris clone s-tris. If I ever let it go into the background it drains battery like crazy.

  9. As Steve pointed out, supplying links to other content is fine, but quoting the whole article or most of it is troublesome.

you risk drawing readers away from the site that worked hard creating the content, possible decreasing their revenue from Advertising and generally taking credits for their work. I think most people would go to a high quality site like AAS frequently and then visiting sites like yours at intervals getting a second opinion on E61 issues. When I then find that you point back to AAS, the value of comming here seem to fade away. The reason I did comment was that I previously found lots of nice stuff here and was sad to see it turn towards a link to AAS. If you had been quoting from the start, i would not have bothered, so take it as a positive remark - even though my original post was a bit negative. I just frown at sites that copy content from others in a large scale. Your comments on daily use of the E61 is what I like, it is a more focused and business oriented blog than most forums..

    regards, Michael

  10. Some interesting points- I think the issue is defining what a blog is. I have sort of set it up like my other sites and news sites tend to point to other sites a lot (adding some of the content as well). I never use the majority of content and the piece is designed to point people ‘to’ the original site.

Maybe I need to work out what people expect from a blog- it’s certainly different to what I have been used to before:)
