PicoBlogger

Filed under: Software — stmcgill @ 12:56 pm

Ewan Spence has written up a review of PicoBlogger which now works on S60 3rd Edition- “I’ve looked at PicoBlogger previously, and in the last year the service has carried on growing. One thing I pointed out then was that PicoBlogger was a one way tool (upload only). Well, all that has now changed.

What raises my eyebrow on returning to PicoBlogger is that it is more than just an uploading tool, it’s an entire, holistic blogging service (dare I say it is very Web 2.0 ish?). They have the photo uploader, the web site, and they provide you with your own photoblog. In version 3, you have the choice to send not only to your PicoBlog (which is set up when you register your details, although the application is free), but you can also post to Blogger, MSN Spaces, WordPress, Movable Type, Typepad or Live Journal sites. If your blog host isn’t there, they do ask you to get in touch so they can add it in the next build. Well it is a bit cheeky, but I’d love to see an open Web2.0 approach and a version of PicoBlogger that works with rival Flickr…”

E61 v 750v

Filed under: Articles — stmcgill @ 4:04 pm

Steve Litchfield has written up a quick head to head of the Nokia E61 and Treo 750v- “You’ll have picked up from the comments above that both devices have their strongpoints and that picking an overall winner isn’t really possible. It’s fair to say that the Treo 750v really surprised me, though. It feels superb in the hand, is quick and responsive and has an acceptable camera. At the end of the day though, the clinching factor for most people is going to be keyboard size - if you’re going for a device with a qwerty keyboard then you want one you can use without continual mistakes - the Treo’s is perhaps just a little too small, but it’s certainly worth a try if you’re passing a Vodafone shop.”

Any good E61 games out there?

Filed under: Software — stmcgill @ 1:37 pm

It is ‘very’ difficult finding good games for the E61 at the best of times so here’s a quick run down of some decent JAVA efforts-

Mobile Grand Prix 2 is surprisingly good fun to play and takes a decent amount of skill to get anywhere. “MGP 2 is a Formula 1 simulator with an advanced physical model, fully customisable vehicles and packed with all official Formula 1 racing tracks. Choose one of the six teams to race with and win all of the races in order to win the championship.
game, mobile, Formula 1,race, speed, championship

Setting slipstream indicator on will show you the optimal path for gaining more speed. Make a pit stop when the formula damage indicator shows severe damage or the tires need to be replaced. When in pit stop follow the number sequence to make your team successfully finish the repairs.”

Black Hawk Down- Team Sabre should be excellent and the first level is indeed great. Shame I can’t work out how to go to level 2 once level 1 is completed?

Based on the popular NovaLogic franchise and sim-shipping with the PS2 release

Team Sabre is a 2D tactical action game represented in a top down view

Player will lead the elite Delta Force® unit on 10 missions through treacherous South American jungles and across remote deserts in the Persian Gulf

Levels alternate between helicopter combat and ground combat and present 20 total action sequences

In ground combat, the player controls individual team members, strategically using their strengths to move across the level.

Granodus Elemental Invasion is pretty big for a JAVA game but it is quite slow to navigate. It does look as though it will get better the more I play it though.

You are the wise magician Granodus. The evil Xantomuphus stole your mighty magic staff, leaving you only a small wand. Your powers are in the magic staff, so you have to get it back as soon as possible.
Xantomuphus filled the area with five types of elementals: iron, fire , earth, wind, water. You have to eliminate all elementals and find the five scrolls of elements to find the evil wizard.
There is an unlimited amount of charges for every element in your wand, so this shouldn’t be a problem…

Controls: D-pad (2,4,6, 8) to move. Click (5) to fire.

I will try to find some more that are worth playing but there is a LOT of rubbish out there! If you have recommendations for any good games let us know…

My Digital Generation

Filed under: Articles — stmcgill @ 10:51 pm

Coming soon to an E61 near you. An eBook called My Digital Generation about growing up with technology, loving it, hating it and finally tolerating it…

When I was very young we used to have an outside toilet and I remember being scared that a big spider or rat would come and visit while I was taking care of business yet at no time did I think it odd that the toilet was in the garden. My brother and I used to have our baths in the kitchen sink and again it all seemed perfectly normal. We used to play in the street because there were hardly any cars and when the man who lived a few doors down picked up the local children to let them sit in the back of his open bed truck while he drove down the hill no one shouted “paedophile!” at him. It was a glorious experience sitting in the back of the truck feeling the wind rush throw my horribly styled hair at a maximum speed of ten miles an hour…”

“…I remember snow very vividly and being able to build a Dad sized snowman and then roll his head down the hill just before the global warming melted him- in those days global warming was called the Sun. I have not seen ‘proper’ snow for many years and my children (3 and 6 years old) have never experienced not being able to walk properly because the snow is up to their knees.”

Smartphone duel: Nokia E62 vs. T-Mobile Dash

Filed under: Articles — stmcgill @ 10:39 pm

Smartphone duel: Nokia E62 vs. T-Mobile Dash has been posted at infoSync and they come to the wrong conclusion :)Both the Dash and the E62 boast superb messaging features, including push e-mail, compatibility with corporate Microsoft Exchange servers and POP/IMAP e-mail access, although the E62 gets a slight edge with its BlackBerry Connect support. Each smartphone boasts multiple IM clients (AIM, ICQ, MSN and Yahoo on the Dash, while the E62 has all but ICQ) and intuitive, easy-to-use messaging clients. That said, neither phone features a contextual, while-you-type menu of contact names in the “To” field for new messages, something we’ve come to expect from the latest smartphones.”
