Two new E61 games

Filed under: Software — stmcgill @ 6:26 pm

Two games from Absolutist are now compatible with the E61. The first is Trivia Machine- “Try the challenging world-top game Trivia Machine now on your Symbian. The game brings you all the fun of a game show and the challenge of more than 7,000 trivia questions in nine categories: movies, science, music, literature, geography, and more! But that’s not all, because you can download new questions from the Internet — you may never see the same question twice! Rack up the points as you answer questions to move on to the next round.”

The second one is Checkers Challenge- “Checkers anyone? Either you need some training for your logic and strategic skills, or you are in need of some rest, this game will be a perfect pastime for you. New Checkers Challenge from Absolutist.com will provide you a decent partner for a game of checkers. New and strong artificial intelligence can play on one of the three available levels of difficulty. This makes the game interesting for the player regardless of his skills in checkers.”

I Hate Guns review

Filed under: Reviews — stmcgill @ 6:23 pm

All About Symbian have a good review up of I Hate Guns- “On starting a new game, you’re presented with a graphical cut-scene, elegance in its simplicity. You answer the phone, and a mysterious stranger pops up in the top corner, like something out of a 1950’s screwball comedy, informing you that your daughter (who you never told anyone you had) has been kidnapped from her foster parents. And like the good absent father that you are, it’s time to knuckle down, hit the American Mid-West, and go get her back.

Just like Lee Majors in The Fall Guy, you’re not one for guns (hence the title), so while every one of the enemies will have some form of deadly weapon (sword, pistol, machine gun, Celine Dion CDs) you’ll be using your five deadly weapons – two hands, two feet and a brain.

As a sideways platform scroller, I Hate Guns breaks none of the rules that you have in your brain about playing these games. It is level based, you’ll be collecting jewels, coins and other items as you traverse the desert to reach your daughter – and the story continues to develop…”

One more annoyance (Call Waiting)

Filed under: Articles — stmcgill @ 6:20 pm

Michael recently added the following to this blog- “My subscription allows me to receive a second call, so while calling other calls come in and the phone gives you the option to swith between the 2 conversations. Now, the E61 gives you no audible notification that a second call is coming in, and there is no setting to adjust volume nor the ringtone. I emailed Nokia for this issue, they confirm there is no setting, they do say that there is a “small” beep. Guess there is something, but I don’t hear it. So, I end up seeing missed calls when I hang up the first conversation.”

I don’t have the problem above and get a nice aubible beep but I have another Call Waiting issue. When I have taken the second call and swap back to the first call the person on the other end of the line gets a LOUD (!) beep- this has happened to three people I have been talking to so far. My wife said today that it hurt her ear and caused a buzzing sensation- anyone else experienced this? A potential issue for Nokia if it can’t be fixed…

SplashID and it’s description

Filed under: Software — stmcgill @ 6:12 pm

I have been following Patrick’s comments in the SplashID forum with interest. Here’s an example- “I see that the new Enterprise Edition of SplashID features sync with Symbian devices as can be concluded from these two sentences:

“SplashID is now available in an Enterprise and Government Edition that provides a complete password security solution for enterprise-scale deployments of Windows and Mac OS desktop computers as well as smartphone and PDA devices, including Palm OS/Treo, Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Smartphone, Symbian Series 60, Symbian UIQ and RIM BlackBerry.”

and

“Expandable and Portable: Synchronize data between PC’s and mobile devices” a bit below in the http://www.splashdata.com/enterprise/ page.

Is this true? If not, then again the presentation of your product would be somewhat misleading, and if (I hope!) this statement is indeed correct then do you have any time frame for availability of the sync with PC’s for Symbian S60 3rd Edition and SplashID Personal Edition?”
