How to install Route 66 on a Nokia E61 (yeah right!)

Filed under: Articles — stmcgill @ 9:50 pm

Last week I was sent review copies of Route 66 for Windows Moble and Symbian S61 V2/3 on CD. The Windows Mobile version will be reviewed on PDA247 at some stage but I jumped on the Symbian version straight away to see if it was better than Navicore on the E61.

I started up the installation process on my PC, chose a few options and was then presented with the following screen-

OK, so I needed to copy all of my applications and files on my 1GB SD card to a folder on my PC and then start the process again. I did that and let the install program format my card. After it did that I was presented with the following screen-

Remember this is a 1GB miniSD card. After discussions with a few people and the below email from Route 66 support I opted for the manual route of copying the program folders on the CD over to the miniSD. After 3 attempts I finally for to the point where the E61 recognised that the program was installed. Hooray!

“In such situations as you described we suggest to install manually the software.

For ROUTE 66 Mobile 7 Symbian S60.

1. Please format first the memory card in FAT (Not in FAT32)

2. Insert the ROUTE 66 Mobile 7 CD in your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive. The installer screen will appear.

3. Select the “Browse content” option in the Installer menu. You will now see the Map “MultiMediaCardImage”. 4. Now copy manually the folders (4) from the CD-ROM to your formatted MMC-card. 5. Put the MMC-card back in your smartphone. You can now activate ROUTE 66 Mobile 7 via Internet or SMS as described in the manual.”

I clicked the icon on the E61 and the activation screen popped up (for about half a second). It kept dissapearing so I emailed Route 66 again and they replied straight away-

Please delete the SMSs from your Inbox (or move them to another folder) and retry.”

You what? Anyway I deleted the messages and the problem carried on. I was also running out of space on my 1GB card with Navicore and Route 66 installed so I bought myself a 512MB card to install Route 66 on (apparently the install program has problems with cards 1GB and over).

I followed the same process until the following screen appeared-

Aaaaaaaargh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I manually installed the software again and got the same problem with the activation screen even though I have no SMSs on the machine at the moment.

Apparently the software itself is very good but at this time I cannot consider trying again- have spent ‘hours’ just trying to install it and it’s driving me mad… I also don’t like the fact that it renames the miniSD card to ‘ROUTE66′ without permission.

When I announced this Blog last Saturday I was aiming for 2000 hits in the first week- 12000 hits later I am starting to wonder if there are indeed a LOT more E61 users out there that I originally thought.

The problem is that the Blog format is a bit limiting and thus your comments would be appreciated regarding if you would like this to stay as a Blog or if you would prefer a full site with a forum, membership and all of the other bits that go with it. Let me know and I will see what can be done.
