Developers! Get a move on!!!

Filed under: Software — stmcgill @ 6:14 pm

I just happened to check the bestseller list at SymbianGear and something occured to me. There are not many 3rd edition applications available at the moment but if you look at the top selling programs a good proportion of them work on S60 3rd edition. Is this coincidence or are other developers missing out on some potential sales here?

Handy Taskman (Beta) & New Version Of Calcium

Filed under: Software — stmcgill @ 2:46 pm

e61life are reporting on a beta of Handy Taskman (full article here) which looks like a quality application. E-Series are also reporting on a new version of Calcium (article here)- “The new version of Calcium is optimized for the Nokia E61’s 320 x 240 screen as well as fixes the decimal point bug. The new version of Calcium is available here.”

Developers applaud the ease of migration…

Just read this at Nokia (not what I’m hearing from developers)- “Developers applaud the ease of migration enabled by the updated platform, and they find the device compatibility and security improvements a plus.

S60 3rd Edition is shaping up to be a hit, say its early adopters. This newest edition of the S60 platform, which is built on Symbian OS, adds greater flexibility and improved security to the world’s leading smartphone platform. Mobile developers have released more than 200 applications for S60 3rd Edition, according to Nokia. And more than 115 enterprise, music, location-based services (LBS), and Macromedia Flash Lite from Adobe applications have been submitted in the Forum Nokia S60 3rd Edition Challenge.

Early adopters of S60 3rd Edition say the updated platform represents a major improvement over S60 2nd Edition. “We’re finding on S60 [3rd Edition] that applications seem to run a lot faster, and we’re really pleased,” says Joel Shafer, vice president of product development at Quickoffice Inc., based in Plano, Texas. “That allows us to introduce more-complex features.”

Similarly, Antony Pranata, a Forum Nokia Champion (and Nokia developer) who creates mobile applications, found that when migrating the Screenshot for Symbian OS application from S60 2nd Edition to S60 3rd Edition, 90 percent of his code executed unchanged. “I needed only about one week,” Pranata says of the migration process, “and that included development and testing.”

Almost replaced the Treo…

Filed under: Articles — stmcgill @ 8:36 am

After 2 weeks I can safely say that the Nokia E61 is doing everything my old Treo 650 did and in a lot of cases (such as email and web browsing) it is doing it much better and much more reliably. From GPS to contact management everything is in place, well almost…

The two activities I still need to manage properly are personal finance and a daily journal. It’s strange but on the Symbian platform personal finance applications are quite weak and for the 3rd edition only 2 or 3 exist and they are not exactly easy to use. I want the ability to add a transaction very quickly and ideally QIF import plus some reporting.

I would have thought that a daily journalling application would be even easier to build and maybe I am being impatient but if you know of any applications that can manage the above tasks well use the commnts link. Also, if there is something you want to do on your E61 and can’t drop a comment in and we will see what we can find :)

Aluminium Case for Nokia E61

Filed under: Accessories — stmcgill @ 8:23 am

The PDair Aluminium Case looks quite nice considering it is a metal design. Most metal cases look awful but I like the fact that this one is black and it seems to complement the silver E61 well.

Thin, Lightweight and strong.
With transparent plastic protection.
Removable 360 degrees belt clip included.
Anodized aircraft-grade aluminium prevents from scratches.
Neoprene inner lining for extra protection and shock absorber.
Easy access to all buttons and features.
High tensil strength aluminium.

Easy to install.
